As part of the Discover India through BITS programme at BITS Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, nine undergraduate students and one faculty member from Kennesaw State University, Georgia, USA, visited Mayem, Goa, to explore rural life, local governance, and community-led conservation initiatives.

The visit was facilitated by Arannya Environment Research Organisation (AERO), in collaboration with Mahamaya Vachanalaya, Mayem, and supported by the Village Panchayat and Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC), Mayem–Vainguinim.

During the visit, the participants engaged in meaningful interactions with local leaders and youth champions, gaining insights into community participation, sustainable development, and environmental coexistence. The exchange provided an opportunity to understand how local institutions and communities contribute to biodiversity conservation and the sustainable management of natural resources.

The programme fostered cross-cultural learning by bringing together international students and local stakeholders to exchange perspectives, experiences, and ideas on environmental stewardship. It also highlighted the importance of community-led initiatives in addressing environmental challenges and strengthening the relationship between people and nature.

The visit to Mayem served as a valuable platform for cultural exchange and collaborative learning, reinforcing the role of local communities in advancing sustainability and conservation.
