Khazan Landscapes of Goa: Episode 1 – Exploring a Living Heritage
Arannya Environment Research Organisation (AERO) presents the first episode of its Khazan storyboard series, introducing the traditional Khazan ecosystems of Goa and their ecological, agricultural and cultural significance.
For generations, local communities have managed these coastal landscapes by adapting to the natural rhythms of the tides. Traditional structures such as bunds, sluice gates and poiems have played an important role in regulating water, supporting agriculture and sustaining habitats for diverse forms of wildlife.
Khazan ecosystems demonstrate how human livelihoods and nature can coexist through traditional knowledge and sustainable resource management. These landscapes represent a valuable living heritage shaped by generations of community experience and adaptation.
As environmental conditions and coastal landscapes continue to change, protecting Khazan ecosystems and preserving the knowledge associated with them becomes increasingly important. Through this series, AERO aims to highlight the significance of Goa’s traditional landscapes and encourage greater awareness of their conservation.
